I LOVE DELÉCLUSE

I’m not going to lie…please don’t hate on Delécluse. Haha, he clearly knows what he’s doing and it tickles my brain every time I learn one of his etudes because it’s like a puzzle piece to me. Like…everything actually makes sense if you sit with it long enough.
I literally just got done practicing Delécluse no. 11. It is very fresh and new to me. I’ve gotten so used to his style of playing that I know exactly what to do. Or at least I know where to go. But it feels so good to just “figure out” all the small tiny details down to ruff placement, roll speed types, and sticking. Sometimes I stop and I’m like wait…that’s actually kinda genius.
I just love it. I love that it forces me to slow down and listen and make decisions instead of just playing notes. Melodic snare drumming is at its core with Delécluse etudes. Like it’s not just technical, it’s musical. And when it clicks, it really clicks.
Also I think that’s why I don’t get bored with it. Like even when I “know” the piece, I don’t actually know it yet. There’s always something new I notice depending on the day, how my hands feel, or how patient I am. And that kinda mirrors life lol. Anyway. Back to the practice room.
